Sometimes I need to get away from my desk to get into a creative frame of mind. During the pandemic shutdown, I frequented the Barnes & Noble parking lot. I went inside the bookstore, looked at some books and magazines, picked up a coffee drink, then cuddled up inside my car to write. It took dreaming up an ambitious idea for a story (maybe a novel?) for me to realize libraries are open again. I don’t have to overheat inside my car anymore; I can go inside comfortable libraries to research and write!
Seeing what’s on the library bookshelves has helped me research my story’s setting and time period. To dig deeper into the characters who populate my story, I’ve ordered books from within the San Mateo County Library System and used the LINK+ service to check out materials from all over the state and have them delivered to my local branch for pickup. I appreciate being able to borrow and consult these books without the expense of travel or having to purchase them.
Having a distraction-free place like the library to go to is very helpful when working on creative writing projects. Sitting in a comfortable chair at a well-lit, clean desk means it’s time to get down to business. Leave the chores at home and make space in your mind for inspiration.
But if you need a little companionship to get in the mood to write, see if your local library facilitates programs for authors or entrepreneurs. I’ve attended “Shut Up and Write” sessions at the San Mateo Library, where writers meet in a room, open their laptops and get to it. We write, undisturbed for as long as we can go! I’ve also participated in a program through the San Carlos Library with other small business owners where we helped each other grow our businesses.
